We have created a short rehab guide for addiction, so you can choose what path to take to help you recover from your substance abuse. The first step is choosing a rehab facility that is locally accessible within Haringey and caters to your detox and treatment needs.
Rehabilitation is a process of detox and holistic therapy that enables anyone suffering from addiction to end their relationship with harmful substances.
You will receive help from numerous people, ranging from our medical professionals, who use their expertise taken from life experiences and qualifications to aid you, to therapists who will listen to anything you’d like to share in group and private therapy sessions. It is also common to receive encouragement from other residents who are on the same journey to sobriety.
Aftercare programmes are also a key element to rehabilitation, as they allow for continued support even after you have completed treatment. Each clinic has their differing benefits, but UKAT has the added bonus of offering you access to our Alumni community.
Free treatment is primarily found via the NHS, through the act of self-referral. It offers a mixture of treatments, ranging between detox programmes, group counselling and outpatient care.
You could also look into charities that aim to help those suffering from addiction. Some charities will have a limited number of residential spaces available, such as
Turning Point.
Haringey has plenty of free treatment options; here is a list we’ve included to help you begin your search:
Address: The Grove, 9 Bruce Grove, Tottenham, London N17 6RA, UK
Number: 020 8360 9102
Web Address: https://www.humankindcharity.org.uk/service/the-grove
Number: 0208 801 3999

Despite there being several free rehab services available, there are many factors that make them unreliable. These include a lack of UK government funding and the rate of addiction increasing rapidly, meaning that there are long waiting lists for spaces. These factors mean there are a limited amount of residential (inpatient) spaces available, usually leaving outpatient care as the only viable option.
AT UKAT, however, you will receive rapid and substantial care. Full-board lodging, specialist programmes and aftercare community projects are also included.
There are multiple examples of addiction treatments and rehab programmes available to you in Haringey. These include outpatient programmes (commonly known as day rehab), which is treated through the NHS and selected private centres, and inpatient (residential) rehab, which is usually only obtainable through private treatment centres.
Outpatient addiction treatment (day rehab) is a simple process of visiting the clinic for your scheduled appointments only; for the duration of your treatment you will continue to stay at home.
Inpatient addiction treatment (residential rehab), on the other hand, requires you to stay in a rehabilitation premise whilst you are receiving treatment. Private rehab gives you multiple benefits, such as 24-hour care and support and interaction with people who are also suffering from addiction and substance abuse.
The first step is choosing the right rehab facility that works the best for you and your recovery needs. This can be a complicated task, especially as there are a number of aspects you need to take into consideration.
The first stage to free treatment admissions is getting a consultation with your GP. If they regard your situation as severe or urgent, they will then refer you to a specialist. Unfortunately, this means waiting up to weeks to hear back for your first appointment.
If you are looking for instant care, we take your admission from the moment you call us and immediately supply you with our on-suite facility within the first 24 hours. On your arrival, you will be welcomed by our licensed psychiatrist and together you will look into all your treatment options that are available and they will help you settle into the facility smoothly.
Each centre abides by different rules, however here is an overall guide to what you may want to bring during your treatment:
Advisory items to bring with you include:
Take into account that you may be asked to limit your mobile phone and laptop use during your stay to improve chances of recovery.
The following items are customarily not permitted:
Detoxification entails allowing time for any harmful substances you have taken to be cleared from your system. In extreme cases, you may be recommended a medical detox, which involves using medication to stop your body from withdrawing too quickly. Sudden decreases of addictive substances in the body can cause shock, so medical detoxes may be required to reduce any discomfort.
Medical detox is a process that must be done in a safe environment and conducted by medical professionals, who will only suggest this method when they deem it necessary.
Picking an advantageous rehab programme in or near the Haringey area is important. Multiple techniques could be used to help you conquer your addiction; a 12-step programme is a commonly used method, whereas some prefer non 12-step programmes; some people feel they benefit more from interaction and group therapy, while others prefer to have one-to-one therapy, improving using the help of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Sometimes it takes the advice from a therapist to truly know what is right for you.
A good rehab should provide you with a mix of both private and group therapy, as well as embracing each person’s personal and religious beliefs. Your main priority should be feeling comfortable in the environment that you’re temporary staying in.
If you are struggling with any mental health conditions or disabilities, then choosing a rehab that can make you feel safe and secure is important. The medical team at UKAT understand the importance of a dual-diagnosis and know it is imperative to ensure any pre-existing conditions are taken into account during treatment and are not overlooked.
Don’t forget to check a rehab’s Care Quality Commission’s ratings (how safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led the clinic is) by searching on their website. These ratings can give you much-needed insight into how right a facility is to you.
You can check our centres’ CQC scores ratings which consist of ‘outstanding’ and ‘good’ ratings throughout.
A competent rehab centre should allow the family members of anyone struggling with substance abuse and addiction a safe place to discuss their feelings and how the addiction has impacted their lives. UKAT organises groups for loved-ones to immerse themselves in the process and helps families to sort through any problems in a calm and confidential space.
Considering how addiction affects those around you will help create a support network when the treatment is complete and clear the air to reduce any anxiety during your recovery.
This depends on the person and the extent of their addiction. Generally, four to twelve weeks is the average amount of time stayed at rehab. UKAT advises booking a treatment programme that lasts a minimum of eight weeks, in order to reap the best results. Our admissions team has found that the longer a person is treated at our facility the more likely it is for them to remain in recovery after their treatment has ended.
An extra benefit of having a longer treatment programme is having more time to cement friendships you’ve made during your stay.
Leaving the comfort and security of a rehab treatment centre can be distressing, especially to anyone who believes they will have limited support from home for the rest of their recovery journey. Rest assured, even after you leave our facility the support and advice will continue for however long you feel you need it.
Group therapy and private therapy are a well-known form of aftercare that are provided with many residential rehabs. UKAT provides one-year free group therapy aftercare for anyone who wishes to use it. In addition, you will have access to UKAT’s Alumni community for the rest of your recovery, enabling everyone going through addiction recovery a chance to meet and strengthen friendships via scheduled events and activities.
Many examples of free support groups include Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA) and SMART Recovery. They are easily found within Haringey and offer you the chance to speak to people who understand your struggle in becoming or staying sober.
Long term-recovery from addiction can sometimes feel exhausting. You may feel you need constant support as you get back to your day-to-day life after rehabilitation treatment, or you may fit seamlessly back into routine with little desire to go back to old habits. However you respond to being back at home, it’s important to remember that UKAT is here to always encourage you to stay on your path to sobriety and achieve your goals, even after you have finished your treatment with us.
Many private rehabilitation companies, including UKAT, accept BUPA insurance. However, be sure to check with your insurance company that your claim is covered.
The longer the length of stay in rehab the higher the success rate for staying sober, as you spend more quality time in therapy and in a sober environment, away from temptation.
Private rehabilitation is completely confidential and does not sit on your medical records.
Family support groups take place every week at each of our centres and anyone who has a close connection to the patient can join. Not all rehabilitation centres offer this option, so this needs to be checked on their website.
