How Self-Medication Can Lead to Addiction

An individual who has had no experience with drugs or addiction may find themselves wondering ‘why?’ – why would someone choose to abuse drugs, knowing the potential consequences? Why would they put their loved ones through such trauma? Why would they continually abuse drugs that are unsafe and potentially life-threatening? However, the answer is not as simple as many would assume.

There are many different reasons a person might abuse drugs; peer pressure, boredom or even to block out painful memories. One woman who has used drugs as a way to block out a difficult upbringing is Chloe Lattanzi, who developed a serious cocaine addiction while abusing the substance regularly. She would use cocaine every day in an attempt to numb the pain of her difficult upbringing, and she consequently ended up with a cocaine addiction that would very nearly ruin her life.

Healthier Lifestyle

Thirty-year-old Chloe Lattanzi, the daughter of Grease star Olivia Newton-John, has been flaunting her toned body on Instagram recently after overcoming a severe cocaine addiction and choosing to live a healthier lifestyle instead. She posted two pictures to the social media site one day last week and claimed to be ‘lazy’ as she opted to stay at home and eat cookies instead of going to the gym. In her first post, which was a picture of her showing off her toned abs in a tiny sports bra, she wrote, ‘When u [sic] know it’s that time to kick your ass so hard! #gymrat #trainpaingainrepeat’.

The second post on her Instagram page showed her reclined on a chair as she posed for the camera, this post was captioned ‘Dis b***h lazy. I stayed home ate cookies and watched Netflix cooking show. I’m all talk today. There’s always tommorow!!! Push me ok! Tommorow don’t let me off the hook!!!! I can’t spell tomorrow.’

A Lot of Pain

Chloe recently revealed that she did not have the easiest childhood growing up as the daughter of Olivia Newton-John, despite what people may think. Speaking to Access Hollywood, she admitted, “There was a lot of pain. Even now I get comments saying ‘stop riding on your mother’s coattails’ and all this nonsense. It is hard to be in the shadow of somebody so incredible and perfect, and I’m far from perfect. I’ve been through a lot of things, and having millions of people watch those things and judge me without knowing me has actually perpetuated those problems.”

Chloe has been open about her challenging past and mental health issues, including anorexia and body dysmorphia. When she turned twenty, she began abusing cocaine to the point where she would be spending up to $130 every day on the substance; this soon developed into a cocaine addiction. She has acknowledged that she started to self-medicate by creating a deadly cocktail of Xanax with alcohol and that she would do this every day.

Never Looked Back

Referring to 2013, Chloe said, “I had blackouts. I would stay up on three-day-long binges without ever going to sleep. Days and weeks started to blend together. I would be out partying every night at different Hollywood clubs, running into other young celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, and just partying the night away.”

However, after successfully overcoming her cocaine addiction in a rehabilitation centre, she found love with martial arts instructor James Driskill, and hasn’t looked back. She said, “I’d have to say my fiancé was the main thing in my life that got me healthy. But battling mental illness, there wasn’t a moment and all of a sudden, you’re better. Lots of therapy, lots of inner work, lots of spiritual work, it takes time.”
